Rebounding strongly from last month's decline, August was a stellar month for U.S. equities. The Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 both jumped 4% with the S&P 500 closing above the 2000 threshold for the first time on August 26th. Volatility ticked lower as the S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures index declined 12%.

The S&P MidCap 400 and the S&P SmallCap 600  also performed strongly this month, posting gains of 5% and 4%, respectively.

Fixed income indices had strong performances across the board.  Both medium-and long-term treasury yields declined.
