RTS – FORTS: Trading Volume Of Deliverable Futures Contracts On Sugar Has Exceeded 1,5 Million Rubles

On September 19, 2007 the trading on deliverable futures contracts on sugar started on FORTS. These contracts are the first deliverable futures on agricultural products.

By results of the day the trading participants executed 13 transactions with 22 contracts. It is equal to 110 tons or two freight cars of sugar. The trading volume of the transactions executed makes up 1 518 000 rubles.

Trading on futures with delivery in November during the day had the price range 13,5-13.86 rubles per kilo. A narrow spread, in contrast to the cash market, where its value makes up to 50 kopecks a kilo, is a sign of profound interest of sugar manufacturers, consumers and stock market participants.

Derivatives market of RTS – FORTS is a leading trading ground for futures and options in Russia. Trading on FORTS started in September 2001. At present FORTS has the widest in Russian range of instruments. These are 58 contracts (39 futures and 19 options) on shares of Russian companies, bonds, short interest rates, currency, RTS Index, oil, oil products and metals.

The trading volume on FORTS in 2006 exceeded 100 bln dollars. All in all there were made more than 5 mln trades with 89,6 mln contracts. Average daily open interest on standard contracts in 2006 grew by 259,5% in rubles and in December reached 5 bln dollars.
