ROFEX: Strong Growth And Record For Financial Futures

Date 01/09/2010

For ROFEX, August was a month of intense activity in its Financial Derivatives Division (DDF). The contract volume increased by 105,64 % as compared to the same month in 2009 and the first two weeks of August ranked first and second in the weekly volume ranking.

In August, US dollar futures experienced an outstanding performance. ROFEX set the monthly trading volume record with 6.909.929 contracts in its Financial Derivatives Division (DDF), surpassing by 14,41 per cent the previous maximum registered in April 2008, when the trading level slightly rose to 6 million contracts.

With an average daily volume higher than 300 million dollars, the accumulated volume throughout the month was up 32,31 per cent from last month, and up 105,64 per cent from August 2009.

Likewise, the first two weeks of the month ranked first and second in the weekly volume ranking, with daily averages around 500 million dollars, respectively. Meanwhile, August 5 was the day with the biggest trading volume, with 602,772 contracts traded.

The accumulated volume between January and August 2010 was up 28,42 per cent from the same period last year, showing an upward trend in financial futures trading and use. It is worth remembering that ROFEX is the only futures and options exchange in the country, where financial products can be traded, including US dollar futures, Euro futures and Rolling Forex.

Simultaneously to these volume records, on August 25, ROFEX announced a discount in the registration fees for those accounts that exceed 500 million dollars per month. Thus, participants with greater volume are given strong incentive, and operational costs equivalent to those of the most developed markets in the world are achieved. “We hope to maintain these trading growth rates, which positions us as a market with high liquidity level in foreign currency futures trading. Our US dollar future is one of the five most active currency contracts in the world”, remarked Luis B. Ossola, ROFEX´s president.
