PEGAS, the natural gas platform commonly established by European Energy Exchange (EEX) and Powernext, announced that a total volume of 45.5 TWh was traded in March 2014. This represents the highest volume traded on PEGAS so far (previous record: 43.0 TWh traded in January 2014).
“For the first time, the majority of the PEGAS volume comes from our Futures Markets. This is a very promising development and shows the acceptance which PEGAS already has in the market”, says Peter Reitz, CEO of EEX.
Spot Markets
Overall trading volumes on the Spot Markets amounted to 18.9 TWh in March, with strong activity on all PEGAS market areas. The German spot markets (market areas GASPOOL and NCG) recorded a volume of 8.5 TWh (March 2013: 7.3 TWh). This volume included 1.9 TWh traded in quality-specific gas products in March. The French spot markets (market areas PEG Nord, PEG Sud, PEG TIGF) registered a total of 7.6 TWh in March (March 2013: 6.1 TWh). The Dutch TTF spot market registered a volume of 2.8 TWh (March 2013: 1.7 TWh). The overall Spot Market volume included 1.1 TWh traded in spread products. All spread spot products (NCG/TTF, GASPOOL/TTF, PEG Nord/TTF, GASPOOL/NCG, PEG Nord/NCG, PEG Sud/PEG Nord and PEG TIGF/PEG Sud) have traded again this month.
Derivatives Markets
In March, trading volumes on the PEGAS Derivatives Markets amounted to 26.6 TWh which amounted to the best month ever on this specific segment (previous record 19.0 TWh traded in January 2014). At 12.4 TWh, the volume traded on the German Futures markets (GASPOOL and NCG market areas) reached a new monthly record (previous record: 11.8 TWh in January 2014). The TTF Futures market registered its best trading volume with 10.0 TWh in March, which represents 3 times the previous record of 3.4 TWh traded in February 2014. In the French market areas, a total of 4.1 TWh was traded on PEG Nord (March 2013: 1.5 TWh) and PEG Sud Futures.
Jean-François Conil-Lacoste, CEO of Powernext, comments: “Within a tense international context and a high volatility period, March has seen a particularly strong development of PEGAS TTF Futures volumes resulting from a substantial increase of active counterparties. Furthermore, the PEG Sud has also reported a volume record which shows a rising interest for that delivery zone”.
Details on the natural gas volumes and prices are available in the enclosed monthly report.
