October 2010 “Islamic Market’s Measure” - Preliminary Report - Monthly Report On The Performance Of The Dow Jones Islamic Market Indexes

Based on the close of trading on October 25, the global Dow Jones Islamic Market Titans 100 Index, which measures the performance of 100 of the leading Shari’ah compliant stocks globally, gained 4.85% month-to-date, closing at 2155.40. In comparison, the Dow Jones Global Titans 50 Index, which measures the 50 biggest companies worldwide, posted a gain of 3.77%, closing at 170.98.

  • The Dow Jones Islamic Market Asia/Pacific Titans 25 Index, which measures the performance of 25 of the leading Shari’ah compliant stocks in the Asia/Pacific region, increased 3.84%, closing at 2018.88. The Dow Jones Asian Titans 50 Index, in comparison, posted a gain of 4.12%, closing at 137.67.

  • Measuring Europe, the Dow Jones Islamic Market Europe Titans 25 Index, which measures the performance of the 25 of the leading Shari’ah compliant stocks in Europe, closed at 2154.44, a gain of 5.51%, while the conventional Dow Jones Europe Index gained 5.47%, closing at 272.30.

  • Measuring the performance of 50 of the largest Shari’ah compliant U.S. stocks, the Dow Jones Islamic Market U.S. Titans 50 Index increased, closing at 2166.81. It represents a gain of 4.77%. The U.S. blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average increased 3.49%, closing at 11164.05.

Dow Jones Islamic Market Indexes versus Conventional Dow Jones Indexes

In October, the Dow Jones DFM Titans 10 Index, measuring the 10 largest and most liquid stocks listed on the Dubai Financial Market, closed at 2407.02. It is a gain of 5.88% month-to-date.

The Dow Jones Islamic Market Kuwait Index posted a gain of 4.41%, closing at 1022.75. Its conventional counterpart index, the Dow Jones Kuwait Composite Index, was up, closing at 250.28. It represents a gain of 3.01%.

The Dow Jones Islamic Market Turkey Index closed at 4254.92, a performance of 12.83% month-to-date, while the Dow Jones Turkey Total Stock Market Index closed at 1659.10, a gain of 9.84%.

Measuring the performance of Shari’ah compliant stocks of five of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states, the Dow Jones Islamic Market GCC Index closed at 1363.18, a gain of 3.14%. The conventional Dow Jones GCC Index was up 3.30%, closing at 1512.72.

Other Markets and Asset Classes

The Dow Jones Islamic Market BRIC Equal Weighted Index increased 3.39%. It had a closing value of 2161.36. By comparison, the Dow Jones BRIC 50 Index closed at 651.67, a gain of 4.02%.

The Dow Jones Citigroup Sukuk Index, which measures the performance of global bonds complying with Islamic investment guidelines, increased 1.12%, closing at 126.03.

The Dow Jones Islamic Market Sustainability Index, which measures sustainable practice business of companies respecting the Shari’ah laws, increased 4.77%, closing at 2407.95. The conventional Dow Jones Sustainability Index, gain 4.50% with a closing value of 1037.17.

Global October 2010 Industries Winners and Losers

All DJIM Industry indexes were up for the month of October. The three best performing Dow Jones Islamic Market Industry Indexes were Basic Materials, Industrials, and Technology with performances of 6.69%, 5.15% and 4.56%, respectively. The Dow Jones Islamic Market Utilities, Dow Jones Islamic Market Consumer Services and Dow Jones Islamic Market Telecommunications indexes posted the narrowest gains with performances of 1.07%, 1.85% and 2.27%, respectively.
