The U.S. blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.59% in October, closing at 13675.25. Stock market indexes in Europe, Asia and globally indexes were down in October, according to preliminary monthly figures from global index providers, Dow Jones Indexes and STOXX Ltd.

  • The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.59% in October, closing at 13675.25. Year-to-date, the index is up 9.73%.(Index calculated in US dollars). The Dow closed at a new all-time high of 14164.53 on October 9, 2007.
  • Measuring Europe, the Dow Jones STOXX 50 Index is down 1.09% for October, closing at 3778.71 Year-to-date, the index is up 2.20%. (Index calculated in Euros)
  • Measuring Eastern Europe, the Dow Jones STOXX EU Enlarged Total Market Index is up 4.28% for October, closing at 390.29. Year-to-date, the index is up 24.65%. (Index calculated in Euros) The performance of the Dow Jones STOXX EU Enlarged 15 blue-chip index is up 3.91% for October, closing at 3882.84. Year-to-date, the index is up 21.99%.   • The Dow Jones Asian Titans 50 Index fell 0.21% in October to 181.13. So far this year, the index is up 10.15%. (Index calculated in US dollars)

OCTOBER 2007 Sector Winners and Losers

  • In the U.S., the Dow Jones Technology sector index was the biggest winner in October, posting a 2.45% gain. The Dow Jones Financials sector index posted the biggest loss, dropping 3.78%.
  • In Europe, the Dow Jones STOXX 600 Automobiles & Parts sector index posted the biggest gain, climbing 4.13%. The Dow Jones STOXX 600 Technology sector index posted the biggest loss, falling 5.30%.
  • In Asia, the Dow Jones Telecommunications sector index posted the biggest gain, climbing 5.76%. The Dow Jones Utilities sector index posted the biggest loss, dropping 2.84%.
  • Globally, the Dow Jones Telecommunications sector index posted the biggest gain, climbing 2.86% in the Dow Jones Sector Titans Indexes. The Dow Jones Banks sector index posted the biggest loss, dropping 2.83%.
