The World Economic Forum today announced that Mark Weldon has been selected as a Young Global Leader 2008. This honour recognises and acknowledges the top young leaders from around the world for their professional accomplishments, commitment to society and the potential to contribute to shaping the future of the world.
Of the 245 Young Global Leader 2008 honorees, 121 are business leaders. The current community of Young Global Leaders represents leading executives, public figures and intellectuals from over 60 countries and includes co-founders of Google, Larry Page and Sergey Brin.
Founder and Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum, Klaus Schwab said, “The World Economic Forum is a true multi-stakeholder community of global decision makers. We need the Young Global Leaders to be a voice for the future in the global thought process and as a catalyst for initiatives in the global public interest.”
The Young Global Leaders 2008 were chosen from a pool of 5,000 candidates by a selection committee of 31 eminent international media leaders, including Thomas H. Glocer, CEO of Reuters, Arthur Sulzberger, Chairman and Publisher of The New York Times and Robert Thomson, Publisher of Dow Jones & Company and the Wall Street Journal.
The World Economic Forum provides the opportunity for this diverse group of Young Global Leaders to meet at a number of occasions during the year around the world. Mark Weldon said it is opportunities like this that make it possible to forge relationships and build deep networks with leaders in rapidly developing countries such as China and India.
