NYMEX Sets Annual and Monthly Volume Records in October

The New York Mercantile Exchange set new monthly and annual volume records during October.
The annual volume records include: Crude oil futures with 31,924,594 contracts traded, exceeding the 30,495,647 contracts traded in 1998. Natural gas futures, which traded 16,252,078 contracts, topping the 15,978,286 contracts traded in 1998, and natural gas options with 3,225,551 contracts surpassing the 3,115,765 contracts traded in 1998. Gold options, which traded 2,411,660 contracts, as versus the 2,080,067 contracts traded in 1987.
The monthly volume records include: Exchange-wide options, which traded 2,145,021 contracts, surpassing the 1,680,762 contracts traded in March 1999. Total options activity on the NYMEX Division reached 1,426,961 contracts exceeding the 1,417,520 contracts traded in March 1999, and total COMEX Divison options trading at 718,060 contracts topping the 462,595 contracts traded in April 1987.
Gold options, which traded 619,506 contracts, surpassing the 334,673 contracts traded in September 1999.
Exchange President R. Patrick Thompson said, "These records coupled with the annual and monthly records established on NYMEX ACCESS®, the Exchange's overnight electronic trading system, demonstrate the continued success of our contracts as we approach the new millenium on the heels of another record year."
