Records include a Total Futures monthly volume record of 3,219,750 contracts, and an Agricultural products record of 2,889,944 contracts. Additionally, NYBOT’s Cotton No. 2 sm (symbol CT) set a new monthly futures volume record with 495,729 contracts. Notable combined futures and options monthly volume increases include the NYBOT Sugar No. 11 sm contract (symbol SB) contract, which saw a 40% increase over last February, currency products up 45%, and Cotton up 15%.
“February 2006 produced the largest total trading volume in our long history, and that is truly a remarkable achievement,” said C. Harry Falk, NYBOT President and CEO. “Our World Sugar contract continues to lead the way with 14 of the 19 trading days during the month having futures and options trading volumes exceeding 100,000 contracts, and February 10 having 151,000 contracts trade. As the Brazilians use an increasing amount of sugar to produce ethanol, the world sugar market reacts accordingly,” he added.
Total Year-To-Date (YTD) futures and options volume increased 29%, and the Futures category had a volume increase of 23%, and options 52%. NYBOT’s Cocoa (symbol CC) futures contract jumped 18%, Orange Juice (symbol OJ) futures contract rose 18%, and the Coffee “C” (symbol KC) futures contract grew 3% and the options 21%.
Also during February, NYBOT Futures & Options for Kids, the exchange’s nonprofit organization created by the commodity industry, announced that it raised a record $1,000,000 over the previous year from exchange members, staff and those throughout the futures industry. The record amount of funds will be awarded to over fifty philanthropic agencies in the tri-state area and Chicago. The charity distributes 100% of the money it raises, as NYBOT assumes all incurred administrative costs.
