May 2011 “Islamic Market’s Measure” - Preliminary Report - Monthly Report On The Performance Of The Dow Jones Islamic Market Indexes

Based on the close of trading on May 24, the global Dow Jones Islamic Market Titans 100 Index, which measures the performance of 100 of the leading Shari’ah compliant stocks globally, dropped 4.48% month-to-date, closing at 2325.11. In comparison, the Dow Jones Global Titans 50 Index, which measures the 50 biggest companies worldwide, posted a loss of 5.17%, closing at 182.24.

− The Dow Jones Islamic Market Asia/Pacific Titans 25 Index, which measures the performance of 25 of the leading Shari’ah compliant stocks in the Asia/Pacific region, decreased 5.55%, closing at 2121.04. The Dow Jones Asian Titans 50 Index, in comparison, posted a loss of 5.84 %, closing at 135.83.

− Measuring Europe, the Dow Jones Islamic Market Europe Titans 25 Index, which measures the performance of the 25 of the leading Shari’ah compliant stocks in Europe, closed at 2282.16, a loss of 5.78%, while the conventional Dow Jones Europe Index loss 7.74%, closing at 284.10.

− Measuring the performance of 50 of the largest Shari’ah compliant U.S. stocks, the Dow Jones Islamic Market U.S. Titans 50 Index decreased, closing at 2365.47. It represents a loss of 3.71%. The U.S. blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average decreased 3.55%, closing at 12356.21.

Dow Jones Islamic Market Indexes versus Conventional Dow Jones Indexes

In May, the Dow Jones DFM Titans 10 Index, measuring the 10 largest and most liquid stocks listed on the Dubai Financial Market, closed at 2027.63. It is a loss of 5.74% month-to-date.

The Dow Jones Islamic Market Kuwait Index posted a loss of 5.85%, closing at 911.49. Its conventional counterpart index, the Dow Jones Kuwait Composite Index, was down, closing at 225.26. It represents a loss of 6.16%.

The Dow Jones Islamic Market Turkey Index closed at 3767.86, a performance loss of 7.85% month-to-date, while the Dow Jones Turkey Total Stock Market Index closed at 1354.73, a loss of 11.04%.

Measuring the performance of Shari’ah compliant stocks of five of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states, the Dow Jones Islamic Market GCC Index closed at 1284.70, a loss of 3.96%. The conventional Dow Jones GCC Index was down 3.99%, closing at 1462.94.

 

Other Markets and Asset Classes

In May, the Dow Jones Islamic Market BRIC Equal Weighted Index decreased 8.56%. It had a closing value of 2114.90. By comparison, the Dow Jones BRIC 50 Index closed at 620.53, a loss of 8.34% month-to-date.

The Dow Jones Citigroup Sukuk Index, which measures the performance of global bonds complying with Islamic investment guidelines, increased 0.94%, closing at 129.85.

The Dow Jones Islamic Market Sustainability Index, which measures sustainable practice business of companies respecting the Shari’ah laws, decreased 5.15%, closing at 2550.33. The conventional Dow Jones Sustainability Index loss 6.37% with a closing value of 1083.80.

 

Global May 2011 Industries Winners and Losers

All DJIM Industry Indexes were down for the month of May. The three Dow Jones Islamic Market Industry Indexes posting the narrowest loss were Healthcare, Consumer Goods and Consumer Services with down performances of 0.01%, 1.21% and 2.35%, respectively.

The Dow Jones Islamic Market Oil & Gas, Dow Jones Islamic Market Basic Materials and Dow Jones Islamic Market Industrials indexes were the three worst performing industry indexes with down performances of 9.10%, 8.56% and 6.58%, respectively.
