Market Turmoil Mars Exchange Performance In February - FTSE Mondo Visione Exchanges Index Drops 7.2 Per Cent In February 2009

Listed exchanges lost more than 50 per cent of their value in the past year, according to the FTSE Mondo Visione Exchanges Index.

Almost 90 per cent of exchanges on the FTSE Mondo Visione Exchanges Index, which aims to reflect market sentiment and is the key indicator of exchanges performance, saw their share values drop by more than half.

The Index was down 7.2 per cent in February 2009.

Herbie Skeete, Managing Director, Mondo Visione and also Co-founder of the Index said:

“In February, there was no respite from the downturn in performance with only CME Group entering positive territory.

February's trading volumes at the CME Group were down 28 per cent from the same month last year, but volume was up from January. In the midst of the ongoing market turmoil, listed exchanges are keeping a careful eye on costs and keeping a weather eye open for growth opportunities.”

The Index closed at 12480.41 on 27 February 2009, down from 13452.77 on 30 January 2009. Year to date, the Index has decreased by 20.9 per cent.

The FTSE Mondo Visione Exchanges Index best performer by capital returns in US dollars was CME Group Inc. with a 4.9 per cent increase in the share price from 30 January to 27 February 2009.

The FTSE Mondo Visione Exchanges Index worst performer by capital returns in US dollars was NYSE Euronext, Inc. with a 23.3 per cent decrease in the share price from 30 January to 27 February 2009.
