The U.S. blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 2.17% in March, closing at 12532.60. Stock market indexes in Europe and Asia fell and globally indexes were up in March, according to preliminary monthly figures from global index providers, Dow Jones Indexes and STOXX Ltd.

  • The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 2.17% in March, closing at 12532.60. Year-to-date, the index is down 5.52%. (Index calculated in US dollars)
  • Measuring Europe, the Dow Jones STOXX 50 Index is down 4.79% for March, closing at 3036.15. Year-to-date, the index is down 17.58%. (Index calculated in Euros)
  • Measuring Eastern Europe, the Dow Jones STOXX EU Enlarged Total Market Index is down 3.68% for March, closing at 299.18. Year-to-date, the index is down 18.15%. (Index calculated in Euros)

MARCH 2008 Sector Winners and Losers

  • In the U.S., the Dow Jones Telecommunications sector index was the biggest winner in March, posting a 4.31% gain. The Dow Jones Oil & Gas sector index posted the biggest loss, dropping 3.75%.
  • In Europe, the Dow Jones STOXX 600 Automobiles & Parts sector index posted the biggest gain, climbing 1.95%. The Dow Jones STOXX 600 Technology sector index posted the biggest loss, falling 10.76%.
  • In Asia, the Dow Jones Technology sector index posted the biggest gain, climbing 2.31%. The Dow Jones Oil & Gas sector index posted the biggest loss, dropping 12.28%.
  • Globally, the Dow Jones Retail sector index posted the biggest gain, climbing 3.11% in the Dow Jones Sector Titans Indexes. The Dow Jones Basic Resources sector index posted the biggest loss, dropping 8.40%.
