LIFFE Trades £215 Billion Per Day In August 2000

The London International Financial Futures and Options Exchange (LIFFE) traded an average daily nominal value of £215 billion (?325 billion) and a total value of £4,941 (?7,461 billion) in July 2000, maintaining its position as the largest European exchange by value.

LIFFE's volume increased by 9% on July 2000, trading 10,165,498 futures and options contracts during August 2000 and representing an average daily volume of 441,977.

LIFFE's Chief Executive, Hugh Freedberg said, "Euribor futures volume continues to grow, having risen 67% year-to-date and accounting for a 98% share of the global market. On 31 August LIFFE's customers traded an active 818,634 futures and options after the European Central Bank raised European interest rates. Trading in equity products has increased by 22% with individual equity options up 39% year-to-date."

The following records were set in August 2000: FTSE 100 Index future set a record open interest of 304,094 contracts on 25 August 2000 (previous record of 300,705 set on 24 August 2000); MSCI Pan Euro Index Future set a record open interest of 10,582 on 2 August 2000 (previous record of 10,034 set on 1 August 2000); Euribor One Year Mid-Curve Option set a record open interest of 91,294 contracts on 30 August 2000 (previous record of 87,744 set on 25 August 2000); FTSE 100 European Index Option set a record open interest of 756,204 contracts on 18 August 2000 (previous record of 754,914 set on 17 August 2000).
