KVH Announces Japan’s First 100G Metro Ethernet Network Service - Collaborating With Ciena And Cyan Platforms To Take Full Advantage Of Proven Technology And New Innovations

Date 14/03/2013

KVH Co. Ltd., Asia’s leading information delivery platform headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, today announced it has launched a ground-breaking 100 Gigabit Metropolitan Ethernet network service, a first in Japan, that will be available from March 14, 2013.

KVH 100Gigabit Ethernet Service will be the first point-to-point 100 Gigabit Metro Ethernet network service launched in Japan.  The service is targeted at customers with large network connectivity requirements between two locations such as data centers, network centers, research and development centers, internet exchanges, hospitals, and large corporate WAN environments.  This new service will be available in the major business centers of Japan, including the greater Tokyo, Osaka, and Kobe areas.  The service is the first step in KVH’s strategy to provide large-scale software-defined networking (SDN) capabilities of up to 100Gbps between its data centers and customers in major financial cities across Asia Pacific.

Demand for high capacity networks is being driven by the aggressive growth of network data. According to IDC, global data volumes are expected to have increased 50-fold since the beginning of 2010 to reach 40 zettabytes by 2020[1].  In Japan, the big data technology and services market is forecasted to grow at a CAGR (Compound Average Growth Rate) of 39.9% and is expected to become a 76.5 billion yen (approx. USD800 million) market by 2016, according to the analyst firm[2].

With KVH 100Gigabit Ethernet Service, customers will be offered guaranteed bandwidth of up to 100Gbps, and can choose from two different levels of redundancy through either the Standard Class (dual access) or Economy Class (single access) service options.  This service is available with a variety of network interfaces, which are all compliant with ITU-T G.709 (International Telecommunication Union Telecommunication Standard Sector) and are backed by strong service level agreements (SLA) covering service availability and fault handling.

KVH is currently running a limited “Introductory Campaign” for the 100Gigabit Ethernet service based on a competitive pricing scheme of JPY 2.5 million yen per month (recurring monthly fee) with zero installation fees until August 31, 2013.  There will be an optional package that allows customers to commit to a minimum of 20Gbps and use the remaining bandwidth on a bursting basis.  In particular, customers currently using more than three 10G circuits will find this new 100G service to be cost-effective.  Additionally, KVH will be working with its hardware providers to make the 100G interface cards more economical for customers.

KVH successfully completed trial testing with the Ciena 6500 Packet-Optical Platform and Cyan Z-Series platforms in February, 2013.  To address the unique needs of each customer, KVH 100Gigabit Ethernet Service will be available on both the Ciena and Cyan platforms, which will be used according to each customer’s requirements.

Kenji Hioki, Chief Operating Officer of KVH remarked, “Japan is a strategic market for KVH.  We are extremely pleased to be a market leader with new technology and service capabilities.  Our 100G Ethernet Metro Service will give our customers greater access to the opportunities presented by the Japanese market.”

“We are pleased to have been selected as a network platform supplier by KVH in Japan, for the KVH 100Gigabit Ethernet Service,” said Anthony McLachlan, Vice President and General Manager, Asia Pacific, Ciena.  “As the pioneer and market leader for 100G coherent optical technology, we believe the Ciena 6500 Packet Optical platform will be a key network services revenue accelerator for KVH.”

According to Andy Wu, Cyan Vice President for the Asia Pacific region, "Cyan is proud to partner with KVH in order to deliver 100G services to businesses and other organizations in Japan at ground-breaking prices.  The ability to deliver 100G services with such compelling economics is a result of, among other innovations, Cyan's recently introduced single-slot 100G coherent transponder supporting any optical reach requirement KVH is presented with.  With minimal investment from KVH, they can flexibly support any customer requirement."

“This announcement of our latest Ethernet service capabilities, Japan’s first 100G Metro Ethernet service, is a further statement in our commitment to the Japan market.  Japan will continue to be a significant component of our pan-Asian strategy as KVH expands its capabilities across Asia Pacific. This new service is the first step in our broader strategy to be able to offer our customers access to data centers and IT services across major Asia Pacific financial centers, interconnected with SDN networking capabilities at levels up to 100G,” added Ted Higase, President and Chief Executive Officer of KVH.
