KCBT Sets Record Electronic Trading Volume In June - Wheat Futures Trading Volume Third Largest In History Of Exchange

Kansas City Board of Trade electronic wheat futures volume for the month of June was a record 153,437 contracts, smashing the previous monthly record set in April 2007 by 33.4 percent. In addition, total wheat futures volume traded during the month of June was the third largest in exchange history. A total of 513,894 contracts were traded, just behind 559,282 contracts traded in August 2006 and 514,595 in June 2006. Wheat futures trading volume exceeded last month’s volume by 103.7 percent, while open interest increased 4.7 percent over the same timeframe.

Continuing concerns about hard red winter wheat crop size and quality have led to volatile markets and increased trading volume. A substantial freeze in April has been followed by storms, heavy rainfall and flooding in harvest areas, significantly impacting the crop and harvest pace.
