The Kansas City Board of Trade has set new monthly trading volume records for the wheat futures contract and for the exchange as a whole for the calendar month of July.
A total of 419,977 contracts were traded at the exchange during July, topping the previous July total exchange record of 348,851 set in 2002, by 20.4 percent.
The hard red winter wheat futures contract also traded the most ever for the month of July, with 377,494 contracts exceeding the previous July record of 289,248 also set in 2002, by 30.5 percent.
Wheat options volume posted strong gains compared to last year with 42,483 contracts, an increase of 141.7 percent from last year.
Open interest continues to swell in both wheat futures and wheat options contracts. Wheat futures open interest set a new all-time record of 172,051 contracts on July 13 and at month’s end was up 91.2 percent compared to last year. Wheat options open interest posted an increase of 97 percent compared to last year.
