KCBT Sees Second Largest January Volume - KCBT January Trading Volume Second Largest in Exchange History for Calendar Month

The Kansas City Board of Trade trading volume for the month of January was the second largest for that calendar month in the history of the exchange. Total exchange volume amounted to 352,893 contracts, an increase of 22.8 percent compared to last January and 69.5 percent compared to last month. This tally is second only to January 2006, which saw trading volume of 372,393 contracts.

The KCBT hard red winter wheat futures contract also saw the second largest volume in the history of the exchange for the month of January. Volume totaled 324,885 contracts, exceeding last January’s volume by 25.7 percent and last month’s volume by 67.9 percent. This month’s volume falls just shy of the record 337,641 contracts traded in 2006.

Gains were seen in open interest for both the hard red winter wheat futures contract and the hard red winter wheat options contract. Open interest at the end of January amounted to 123,907 contracts for wheat futures, a gain of 1.1 percent in the past month and 5.6 percent when compared to last year. The wheat options open interest stood at 49,636 contracts at month’s end, an increase of 13.7 percent compared to last month and 38.4 percent compared to a year ago.
