Kansas City--July 1, 2010--The Kansas City Board of Trade shattered all previous monthly volume records during the month of June as a new all-time monthly volume record was set for Hard Red Winter Wheat futures, as was a new exchange monthly volume record.
A total of 612,733 HRW wheat futures contracts were traded in June, which was an increase 8.4 percent over the previous all-time monthly volume record of 565,463 contracts set in August 2007.
Total exchange volume in June amounted to 620,982 contracts, topping the previous monthly volume record of 612,113 set in August 2006 by 1.4 percent. Volume traded during the month of June was more than double the amount traded in May. Wheat futures and total exchange volume were both up 101.4 percent.
Trade was very active in the intra-market and inter-market wheat spreads in June, said KCBT traders. The onset of harvest, improving demand for hard red winter wheat, burdensome carryover stocks, and crop concerns in Canada and China also contributed to the increase in volume.
Year-to-date trading volume for HRW wheat futures and the exchange continues to post gains compared to last year. Wheat futures trading volume is up 29.3 percent compared to last year at this time, with total exchange volume running 27.3 percent ahead of last year at this time.
Wheat futures open interest continued at robust levels, with open interest at the end of June at 161,115 contracts, an increase of 85.2 percent compared to the end of June 2009. Wheat options open interest is up 18.1 percent for the same time period.
