Kansas City Board of Trade total exchange volume for the month of April was the third largest in exchange history for the calendar month, with strong HRW wheat futures volume also the third largest for the month of April.
HRW wheat futures volume for the month tallied 401,418 contracts, behind only 2006 with 436,265 contracts and 2007 with 430,159 contracts. Total exchange volume of 405,268 contracts was behind only 2006 with 483,398 contracts and 2007 with 471,585 contracts.
Open interest continued to be strong during the month of April. Wheat futures open interest at month’s end stood at 148,846 contracts, up 97.8 percent compared to the end of last April. All-time high open interest in the contract is 172,936 contracts, set on July 12, 2006. Wheat options open interest posted a 2.2 percent gain when compared to last April.
Year-to-date trading volume for the exchange continues to expand when compared to last year. Total exchange volume is running 22.4 percent ahead of last year at this time, with wheat futures trading volume up 23.5 percent compared to last year at this time.
