January Was Busiest Month In CBOE History - Record Volume Of 53.9 Million Driven By 63% Increase In Equity Option Trading

The Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) announced today that, following two consecutive record-breaking years, 2006 is off to a torrid start as trading in January set a new all-time record for monthly volume at CBOE.January's record volume of 53.9 million contracts was an increase of 55% over January 2005, and surpassed the previous monthly record of 49.6 million contracts from October 2005. Average daily volume of nearly 2.7 million contracts during January was also a new all-time record for the Exchange. CBOE's record volume was fueled by heavy trading in equity options, as for the month, CBOE traded more than 35 million equity option contracts, also a new all-time record for the Exchange, and 63% above January 2005's volume.

January highlights at CBOE included:
- On Friday, January 20th, CBOE experienced the busiest day in its history, trading nearly 5.3 million contracts, and also set new all-time single-day trading records in: 1) total equity option volume: 2,878,351 contracts; 2) total index option volume: 2,391,146 contracts; 3) total S&P 500 Index option (SPX) volume: 922,876 contracts; and 4) total number of trades handled: 542,098.

- January volume in stock option classes rose 63% over last year as an all-time record 35.0 million contracts were traded. The top five most-actively traded equity options during the month were: Apple Computer, Inc. (AAPL), General Motors (GM), Google Inc. (GOOG), IVAX Corporation (IVX), and Intel Corporation (INTC).

- Volume in index options was 18.9 million contracts, an increase of 42% over January 2005. The top five most-actively traded index options were: S&P 500 Index (SPX), Nasdaq-100 Index Tracking Stock (QQQ), S&P 100 Index (OEX), iShares Russell 2000 Index Fund (IWM), and Standard & Poor's Depositary Receipts (SPY).

- Volume in options on the Nasdaq-100 Index (NDX) set a new all-time monthly record in January as 737,236 contracts traded, an increase of 96% over January 2005.

- At CBOE Futures Exchange (CFE), January volume totaled 24,668 contracts traded, the second busiest month in CFE's 22-month history, and an increase of 193% over January 2005. At month's end, open interest stood at a new record high of 21,510 contracts. Trading in futures on the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) set three new all-time records, including: 1) monthly volume: 21,502 contracts; 2) open interest: 19,476 contracts; and 3) single-day volume: 4,604 contracts traded on January 31st.
