FTSE/Mondo Visione Exchanges Index Remains In Negative Territory - Mixed Month For Listed Exchanges - Index Decreases By 1.6 Per Cent In July

Despite improved performance of eight listed exchanges, the FTSE/Mondo Visione Exchanges Index1 continued to fall by 1.6 per cent in July.

The Index, which aims to reflect market sentiment and is a key indicator of exchanges’ performance, closed at 26,548.57 on 31 July 2008, down from 26,972.32 on 30 June 2008. Year to date, the Index has decreased by 44.8 per cent.

The FTSE/Mondo Visione Exchanges Index best performer by capital returns in US dollars, was Greece’s Hellenic Exchanges SA with a 12.2 per cent increase in the share price from June 30 to July 31, 2008.

The FTSE/Mondo Visione Exchanges Index worst performer by capital returns in US dollars, was IntercontinentalExchange (ICE) with a 12.5 per cent decrease in the share price from June 30 to July 31, 2008.

Herbie Skeete, Managing Director of Mondo Visione and co-founder of the Index said: "July was a month of contrasts for listed exchanges as slightly less than half of the exchanges returned to positive territory. Hellenic Exchanges was the best performer ending a six-month streak of losses. Derivatives exchanges continue to lose ground amid investor concern that banks and brokerages may curb trading because of loan losses."
