FTSE/Mondo Visione Exchanges Index Decreases By 5.1 Per Cent In May

The FTSE/Mondo Visione Exchanges Index, which tracks the performance of 18 publicly-listed exchanges and trading platforms, fell by 5.1 per cent in May.

The Index, which aims to reflect market sentiment and is a key indicator of exchanges’ performance, closed at 32551.91 on 31 May 2008, down from 34308.24 on April 30 2008. Year to date, the Index has decreased by 32.4 per cent.

The FTSE/Mondo Visione Exchanges Index best performer by capital returns in US dollars, was Brazil’s Bolsa de Mercadorias e Futuros with a 15.3 per cent increase in the share price from April 30 to May 31 2008.

The FTSE/Mondo Visione Exchanges Index worst performer by capital returns in US dollars, was Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Ltd. with a 15.9 per cent decrease in the share price from April 30 to May 31 2008.

In May the share price performance of 13 of the 18 listed exchanges and trading platforms on the Index, decreased.

Herbie Skeete, Managing Director of Mondo Visione and co-founder of the Index said: “The two listed Brazilian exchanges continue to outperform other constituents of the FTSE/Mondo Visione Exchanges Index as investors seek a way to profit from a booming Brazilian economy. The worst performer was Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing which has seen reduced trading during the current market slump. Hong Kong has been adversely affected by the decline of the mainland equity market.”
