Electricity trading volume on the European Energy Exchange (EEX) in September 2008 totalled 119.8 TWh, compared with 89.8 TWh in September 2007.
This includes 12,765,893 MWh (September 2007: 10,398,946 MWh) traded on the electricity Spot Market, where the average base load price (Phelix Base Month) for the month was 88.30 Euro/MWh and the peak load price (Phelix Peak Month) 116.46 Euro/MWh.
Intraday volume in September 2008 was 194,654 MWh (September 2007: 130,511 MWh).
On the Swiss electricity Spot Market September 2008 volume was 610,124 MWh (September 2007: 292,505 MWh).
Trading volume in electricity derivatives in September 2008 totalled 107.0 TWh (September 2007: 79.4 TWh). This includes 86.7 TWh from OTC clearing. The Open Interest at 30 September 2008 was 396.6 TWh. The 2009 base load price for German electricity was fixed at 77.29 Euro/MWh on 30 September 2008 and the 2009 peak load price at 110.00 Euro/MWh.
A total of 7,004,000 EU Allowances (EUA) (2,597,000 EUAs September 2007) were traded on the EEX Derivatives Market in September. The 2008 contract was fixed at 22.45 Euro/EUA on 30 September 2008, and the 2009 contract at 23.40 Euro/EUA.
As of 26 March 2008, it is possible to trade CER Futures on the EEX (Certified Emis-sion Reductions), global emission credits in accordance with the Kyoto Protocol. In September a volume of 281,000 CERs was traded. On 30 September 2008, the 2008 contract traded at 18.70 Euro/CER and the 2009 contract at 18.78 Euro/CER.
In September 2008, the total Spot Market volume for natural gas (GUD and E.ON GT market areas) was 158,880 MWh which is the highest monthly volume since trading start (23,040 MWh September 2007). The Spot Market price for the delivery of natural gas ranged between 26.80 Euro/MWh and 34.04 Euro/MWh.
Volumes on the Derivatives Market for natural gas (GUD and E.ON GT market areas) amounted to 1,086,930 MWh (705.270 MWh September 2007). On 30 September 2008, the open interest was 3,456,491 MWh. On 30 September 2008 natural gas prices for delivery in 2009 were fixed at 34.81 Euro/MWh (GUD) and 35.39 Euro/MWh (E.ON GT), respectively.
EEX currently has 214 member companies from 20 countries. In September, European Market Coupling Company GmbH (EMCC), Hamburg, and Stadtwerke Viernheim GmbH, Viernheim, were admitted to the EEX Spot Market. In addition another company from Germany was admitted to the EEX Derivatives Market.
