EEX Trading Results And New Admissions In October

Electricity trading volume on the European Energy Exchange (EEX) in October 2008 totalled 110.3 TWh, compared with 149.3 TWh in October 2007.

This includes 13,445,006 MWh (October 2007: 11,413,404 MWh) traded on the electricity Spot Market, where the average base load price (Phelix Base Month) for the month was 85.62 Euro/MWh and the peak load price (Phelix Peak Month) 118.35 Euro/MWh.

Intraday volume in October 2008 was 188,548 MWh (October 2007: 205,551 MWh).

On the Swiss electricity Spot Market October 2008 volume was 509,724 MWh (October 2007: 471,166 MWh).

Trading volume in electricity derivatives in October 2008 totalled 96.8 TWh (October 2007: 137.9 TWh). This includes 79.3 TWh from OTC clearing. The Open Interest at 31 October 2008 was 418.0 TWh. The 2009 base load price for German electricity was fixed at 68.20 Euro/MWh on 31 October 2008 and the 2009 peak load price at 98.94 Euro/MWh.

A total of 16,666,000 EU Allowances (EUA) (977,000 EUAs October 2007) were traded on the EEX Derivatives Market in October. The 2008 contract was fixed at 17.80 Euro/EUA on 31 October 2008, and the 2009 contract at 18.30 Euro/EUA.

As of 26 March 2008, it is possible to trade CER Futures on the EEX (Certified Emission Reductions), global emission credits in accordance with the Kyoto Protocol. In October a volume of 175,000 CERs was traded. On 31 October 2008, the 2008 con-tract traded at 15.04 Euro/CER and the 2009 contract at 15.00 Euro/CER.

In October 2008, the total Spot Market volume for natural gas (GUD and E.ON GT market areas) was 118,890 MWh (97,230 MWh October 2007). The Spot Market price for the delivery of natural gas ranged between 20.00 Euro/MWh and 32.40 Euro/MWh.

Volumes on the Derivatives Market for natural gas (GUD and E.ON GT market areas) amounted to 2,763,100 MWh (1,308,980 MWh October 2007). On 31 October 2008, the open interest was 3,916,644 MWh. On 31 October 2008 natural gas prices for delivery in 2009 were fixed at 27.45 Euro/MWh (GUD) and 28.22 Euro/MWh (E.ON GT), respectively.

EEX currently has 214 member companies from 19 countries. In October, Energy Logistics and Services GmbH, Vienna, and Saar Ferngas AG, Saarbrücken, were ad-mitted to the EEX Spot and Derivatives Market. Within the EEX/Eurex cooperation in emissions trading Liquid Capital Markets Ltd., London, was admitted to the EEX Derivatives Market. All Energy Trading B.V., Amsterdam, VDM Energy Trading B.V., Amsterdam and another company have cancelled their membership.
