EEX Trading Results And New Admissions In November

Electricity trading volume on the European Energy Exchange (EEX) in November 2008 totalled 106.0 TWh, compared with 113.5 TWh in November 2007.

This includes 13,101,867 MWh (November 2007: 11,217,164 MWh) traded on the electricity Spot Market, where the average base load price (Phelix Base Month) for the month was 63.72 Euro/MWh and the peak load price (Phelix Peak Month) 91.85 Euro/MWh.

Intraday volume in November 2008 was 223,954 MWh (November 2007: 211,445 MWh).

On the Swiss electricity Spot Market November 2008 volume was 525,440 MWh (November 2007: 474,192 MWh).

Trading volume in electricity derivatives in November 2008 totalled 92.9 TWh (November 2007: 102.3 TWh). This includes 77.7 TWh from OTC clearing. The Open Interest at 28 November 2008 was 350.0 TWh. The 2009 base load price for German electricity was fixed at 59.80 Euro/MWh on 28 November 2008 and the 2009 peak load price at 87.06 Euro/MWh.

A total of 11,080,000 EU Allowances (EUA) (1,184,000 EUAs November 2007) was traded on the EEX Derivatives Market in November. The 2008 contract was fixed at 15.58 Euro/EUA on 28 November 2008, and the 2009 contract at 16.29 Euro/EUA.

As of 26 March 2008, it is possible to trade CER Futures on the EEX (Certified Emission Reductions), global emission credits in accordance with the Kyoto Protocol. In November a volume of 397,000 CERs was traded. On 28 November 2008, the 2008 contract traded at 14.00 Euro/CER and the 2009 contract at 14.03 Euro/CER. In November 2008, the total Spot Market volume for natural gas (GUD and E.ON GT market areas) amounted to 168,960 MWh (November 2007 101,280 MWh). This is the highest monthly volume since trading start. By now already 50 companies are admitted for trading on the EEX Spot Market for natural gas. The Spot Market price for the delivery of natural gas ranged between 18.05 Euro/MWh and 30.50 Euro/MWh.

Volumes on the Derivatives Market for natural gas (GUD and E.ON GT market areas) amounted to 715,900 MWh (635,450 MWh November 2007). On 28 November 2008, the open interest was 4,002,074 MWh. On 28 November 2008 natural gas prices for delivery in 2009 were fixed at 23.58 Euro/MWh (GUD) and 24.23 Euro/MWh (E.ON GT), respectively.

EEX currently has 214 member companies from 19 countries. In November, Groupe E AG, Fribourg/Switzerland, was admitted to the EEX Spot Market. Bear Stearns International Ltd., London, has cancelled its membership.
