EEX: Successful Launch Of Spot Trading In Gas Within The Market Area Of E.ON Gastransport

Date 02/10/2007

Following E.ON Gastransport’s merger of the three H-gas market areas, which it has operated so far, into one federal H-gas market area, spot trading in natural gas in this market area was launched successfully on European En-ergy Exchange AG (EEX) on 1 October. Out of in total 34 trading participants licensed to participate in gas trading, 11 companies (among others: BG International Limited, BKW FMB Energie AG, E.ON Ruhrgas AG, GETEC Energie AG, RWE Trading GmbH, Stadtwerke Hannover AG, Statkraft Markets GmbH, Syneco Trading GmbH, Trianel European Energy Trading GmbH, VNG – Verbundnetz Gas Aktiengesellschaft) traded a total of 9,360 MWh of natural gas in the market area of E.ON Gastransport on the Spot Market. In this process, a price of between EUR 18.75 and 20.40 per megawatt-hour was established.

As was announced at the beginning of the year, EEX concludes the establishment of the German gas exchange with this step and now offers a platform for trading comprising the whole product range within the market areas of BEB and of E.ON Gastransport both on the Spot and on the Derivatives Market.

In order to make the launch of natural gas trading even more attractive for the trading participants the transaction fees regarding natural gas trading will be reduced until the end of the year 2007 as a special offer for the market.

EEX operates a Spot and a Derivatives Market for energy products. With more than 175 trading participants from 19 countries it is the energy exchange in continental Europe which boasts the biggest number of trading participants and the highest turn-over. While coal is only quoted on the Derivatives Market, power, natural gas and CO2 emission allowances are traded both short-term on the Spot Market and long-term on the Derivatives Market with a time horizon of up to six years into the future.

Clearing of exchange and over-the-counter transactions (OTC clearing) is provided by European Commodity Clearing AG (ECC). ECC is the clearing house of EEX and a subsidiary of the exchange.
