EEX: Record Volumes Achieved On Power And Dairy Markets

The monthly volume on EEX’s power derivatives market, amounted to 270.1 terawatt hours (TWh) in October 2015 which is a new record and an increase of 75 % compared to October 2014 (154.4 TWh). Thus, EEX, for the first time, achieved a volume of more than 250 TWh in this market with the previous record of 228.8 TWh being traded in February 2015.

In particular, trading of Power Futures for Germany (172.4 TWh), France (36.3 TWh) and Italy (47.7 TWh) as well as Power Options (10.5 TWh) contributed to this result. In October, EEX achieved new record volumes in all mentioned products.

The October volumes comprised 155.1 TWh registered at EEX for clearing. Clearing and settlement of all transactions was executed by European Commodity Clearing (ECC).

Emission Allowances

On the EEX Market for emission allowances, a total volume of 68.6 million tonnes of CO2 was traded in October, which is an increase of 65 % compared to the previous year (October 2014: 41.5 million tonnes of CO2). In October, primary market auctions contributed 54.7 million tonnes of CO2 to the total volume. On the secondary market, EEX nearly doubled the traded volumes.

Agricultural Products

In October, 3,128 contracts were traded in agricultural products at EEX. This includes 623 contracts (equal to 3,115 tonnes) from Skimmed Milk Powder which is the highest ever monthly volume that has been traded on a Derivatives Market in Europe thus far, more than doubling the previous record volume of 304 contracts that was registered on Eurex Exchange in November 2014.

The total dairy sector recorded a volume of 930 contracts (equal to 4,650 tonnes) in October. This is the second highest volume for dairy products in Europe that was ever traded on an exchange, after 979 contracts registered at Eurex Exchange in August 2014.

New Participants

In October, EEX admitted ECOWAY S.P.A., Milan, Energieallianz Austria GmbH, Vienna, Nova Energy Trading ApS, Risskov (Denmark), Renta 4 Banco, Madrid, and TrailStone Commodity Trading UK Ltd, London, as new trading participants. Verbund Trading GmbH, Vienna, was additionally admitted to trading of Cap Futures. The membership of Vitol S.A., Geneva, was extended with Nordic Power Futures.
