EEX Is Awarded Contract For The Permanent German Auction Platform

Date 05/03/2013

The European Energy Exchange (EEX) has won the tender for the permanent auctioning platform on behalf of the Federal Republic of Germany. This means that EEX – in cooperation with Eurex Exchange – will conduct auctions of general EU allowances (EUA) and EU aviation allowances (EUAA) for the next three years with the possibility of extension for a further two years. At present, EEX carries out these auctions as a transitional auction platform.

“The mandate to conduct the German auctions on the permanent auctioning platform as well testifies to the trust placed in us and the acknowledgement of EEX as a reliable service provider for CO2 auctions”, says Peter Reitz, CEO of EEX. “We are looking forward to the continued cooperation.”

In the year 2013, a volume of 182,560,500 emission allowances will be auctioned through the Spot Market of the exchange according to a provisional calculation by the European Commission.

Before the launch of the permanent German auctions, EEX has to go through an auditing procedure of the EU Commission and will be included in an annex to the EU Auctioning Regulation after approval has been granted.

Together, European Energy Exchange (EEX) and Eurex Exchange offer their participants a platform for trading in CO2 emission allowances. In the framework of the cooperation, which was launched in December 2007, Eurex participants can trade the CO2 products listed on EEX through their existing infrastructure.
