EDHEC-Risk Institute Unveils Major Scholarship Programme For Asia-Pacific

Date 24/07/2013

To support the build-up of a strong, home-grown cohort of financial sector and capital market leaders within ASEAN countries and the wider Asia-Pacific region, EDHEC Risk Institute–Asia is creating a scholarship scheme aimed at facilitating the participation of outstanding professionals in the executive track of its doctoral programme in Singapore.

Ahead of the launch of the ASEAN Economic Community[1] and in the wider context of Asia-Pacific integration, EDHEC-Risk Institute has unveiled a new initiative to accelerate the build-up of a regional pool of finance experts and leaders.

Part of hundred-year old EDHEC Business School, the finance research institute is creating a new scholarship programme to facilitate the participation of Asia-Pacific practitioners in the executive track of its PhD in Finance programme.[2]

“Since it began, the EDHEC-Risk Institute PhD in Finance has been contributing to capacity building in ASEAN by training Singapore professionals to become specialist leaders in finance. This accelerated with the opening of the Asian chapter of the programme in Singapore three years ago. With the EDHEC-Risk Institute Asia-Pacific Doctoral Scholarship Programme, we intend to contribute to the increase in numbers of home-grown experts across the region that is required for economic integration to succeed and for more ASEAN financial institutions to emerge as world-class organisations,” says Frédéric Ducoulombier, Director of EDHEC Risk Institute–Asia.

The outstanding professional scheme is targeted at practitioners who can demonstrate exceptional academic and professional achievements. Under this scheme, the Singapore-based institute will commit over USD1 million, awarding up to three full-tuition scholarships to ASEAN member country nationals and up to seven half-tuition scholarships to ASEAN and other Asia-Pacific professionals.

Offered since 2008, the EDHEC-Risk Institute PhD in Finance equips professionals with the scientific background and research skills required to advance knowledge and practices in the financial industry. It is delivered over three years in a format that minimises residency requirements to allow professionals from the world over to participate without interrupting their careers. The programme welcomes over seventy participants from some thirty countries and is offered in Europe, from London and Nice, and in Asia, from Singapore. Its participants have exceptional academic and professional credentials and an average of fifteen years of experience. Participants follow a challenging curriculum to develop their finance expertise and work with leading specialists on research at the heart of the concerns of their organisations. The programme faculty of thirty-three brings together senior EDHEC-Risk Institute scholars and outstanding affiliate professors from institutions such as Princeton University, Duke University, the University of Oxford, the University of Chicago and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

[1] The Association of Southeast Asian Nations Economic Community will create a single market for a region that is home to 600 million citizens and whose gross domestic product is forecasted to double to USD5 trillion by 2020.

[2] EDHEC-Risk Institute is also expanding the existing scheme for participation in the residential track of its doctoral programme by opening two positions in Singapore for professionals interested in careers in research institutions. Professionals selected to join EDHEC Risk Institute–Asia under the residential track scheme will work as research assistants and will receive a full-tuition waiver plus a competitive stipend.
