ECX Market Update & EUA Volume – January 2008

Highlights:

• January volumes reached a new monthly record of 171 Mt, up 180% on January 2007. Futures represented 74% and options 26%.

• Average daily futures and options volume were 7.8 Mt. On 22nd January, ECX enjoyed its record daily volume to date with 14.9 Mt (14,900 lots) trading.

• Options trading activity picked up significantly. 44.5 Mt traded in January representing a 308% increase over the previous highest month of 10.9 Mt tonnes in September 2007. There was a wide variance in strike prices – calls ranged from €19 to €50, puts from €8 to €23.

• Futures open interest stands at 151 Mt, options open interest at 50 Mt (split in 34 Mt for calls and 16 Mt for puts).

• ECX & ICE Futures Europe welcome two new emissions members this month: British Gas International and Jaypee International.
