Deirdre Somers, Chief Executive Of the Irish Stock Exchange, Elected President Of The Federation Of European Securities Exchanges (FESE)

Date 17/06/2015

Deirdre Somers, Chief Executive of the Irish Stock Exchange, was elected as the new President of the Federation of European Securities Exchanges (FESE) on 17th June 2015 for a term of three years. The election was unanimously approved by the FESE General Assembly at their bi-annual meeting in Oslo today.

Ms Somers has been actively involved in the work of FESE for a number of years and has played an integral role in the development of FESE into the association it is today.  Ms Somers was Vice-President of FESE from 2010 until 2013 and remained a key member to the FESE Board thereafter.

Ms Deirdre Somers said ‘I would like to thank the Members of FESE for electing me as President, it is an honour for me to take on this prestigious role and represent the European Exchanges.

FESE is a crucial organisation to exchanges in Europe, it provides one voice on the important issues being discussed at the EU level. Together, FESE members have contributed extensively to EU financial regulation and I will endeavour to continue the excellent work of my predecessors.

Looking to the future, FESE has an important role to play in contributing towards the Capital Markets Union. Capital markets, through exchanges, help diversify and deepen funding options, deliver higher levels of innovation, efficient risk management, savings mobilisation, wealth distribution and job creation. The market infrastructure and services provided by FESE Members are key to delivering European economic growth, which is why I believe FESE’s contribution is crucial to the CMU debate.

I look forward to working closely with all of FESE Members and FESE’s Director General Rainer Riess.

Newly Elected Members to the Board:

The FESE General Assembly during its meeting in Oslo today also unanimously agreed the appointment of Mr Uwe Schweickert, Director for Eurex Frankfurt AG, the derivatives arm of Deutsche Börse AG and Mr Ian Cornwall, Director, Head of Market Structure at SIX Swiss Exchange as Members of the Board for a term of three years.
