Cyprus Stock Exchange Review Of Developments In August 2000

During August there was a slight decrease in the General Price Index but also in the value of shares traded compared to July. The various figures and statistics are analysed below.

Prices: The last day of the month General Price Index was 370.63 points. It is worthy to mention, however, that the highest level that the index reached for the month was 407.00 points. On a sectoral level, sub-indices reached the following points: Banking sector 458.94%, Approval Investment companies sector 258.58%, Insurance companies sector 228.50%, Manufacturing sector 1 23.37%. Tourism sector 3 2.65%, Trading sector 1 23.2%, and finally the Other Companies sector 4 9.36%.

Market Capitalisation: The total market capitalisation (shares) reached £8,407 billion from £9,053 billion the previous month registering a decrease of 7.3%. According to this month results the Banking sector accounted for 48.22% of the total market capitalisation, the Miscellaneous Companies sector 26.24%, and the Tourism sector 7.42%. The Trading sector 4.76%, the Manufacturing sector 5.29%, the Approved Investment Companies sector 6.56%, the Insurance sector 1 .5 % respectively, of the total market cap. Moreover the total market capitalisation including the Corporate and Government bonds decreased to £9,638 billion compared to £0,548 billion at the previous month registering a decrease of 8.62%.

Transactions: The total value of transactions during the month in review reached £424 million with an average of £9 million per trading session. The Miscellaneous sector contributed 50.93% of the total value traded, which was the highest, whereas the Government Bonds had the lowest contribution with 0.0 %. Investors primarily focused their interest on the shares of L.K.Globalsoft.Com Ltd and Toxotis Investments Ltd with 1 9.92% and 1 0.28% respectively.
