- Will Provide Additional Real-Time Volatility Information When News Breaks Overnight
- Will Enable Overseas Investors to Reference VIX Index During Their Regular Trading Hours
The Chicago Board Options Exchange® (CBOE®) today announced that it plans to begin overnight dissemination of the CBOE Volatility Index® (VIX® Index) in March.
Values for the VIX Index are expected to be published every 15 seconds during CBOE's extended trading hours session for VIX and S&P 500® Index (SPX) options, which runs from 2:00 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. CT.
The CBOE VIX Index, widely considered to be the world's premier barometer of equity market volatility, is calculated using real-time prices of SPX options, which historically traded only during regular U.S. trading hours. In March 2015, CBOE added the additional 6-hour and 15-minute overnight SPX trading session. The added trading hours provide a global customer base with increased access to SPX trading, and also enable CBOE to calculate and disseminate the VIX Index during the overnight trading session.
"Overnight dissemination of the VIX Index enables market participants to view volatility during that period through the same lens used in regular U.S. trading hours," said CBOE Holdings CEO Edward T. Tilly. "Our ability to more continuously calculate VIX will provide additional real-time volatility information when news breaks overnight and will enable overseas investors to reference VIX during their regular trading hours, further cementing the role of VIX as the world's gauge for market volatility."
