CBOE June Index Volume Up 86%; Exchangewide Open Interest Up 95%; iShares Set Monthly Records In June

Total index option volume for the month of June at the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) rose 86%, from 3,131,470 contracts in June 2000 to 5,830,641 contracts (2,772,268 calls and 3,058,373 puts) in June 2001. Options on the Dow Jones Industrial AverageSM (DJX) led the major index gains at CBOE. DJX volume increased 165%, from 231,239 contracts in June 2000 to 612,275 contracts in June 2001. CBOE's newest product, options on the Nasdaq-100 Index Tracking StockSM (QQQ) continued to exceed volume expectations since its launch on February 27. QQQ volume reached 1,693,197 contracts (962,875 calls and 730,322 puts) for the month of June, making it the most actively traded index option at CBOE for the third month in a row.

Single-day volume records were set in June for both shares and options in the iSharesSM S&P 100® Index Fund (OEF). On June 7, OEF volume was a record 827,500 shares. On June 14, a single-day volume record for trading IN options on the OEF was established, when a total of 46,518 contracts traded. The iSharesSM S&P 100® Index Fund is an exchange-traded fund that seeks the investment results which correspond generally to the price and yield performance, before fees and expenses, of the S&P 100® Index.

In a month with one less trading day than June 2000, total volume at CBOE decreased by more than 5% from 24,412,825 contracts in June 2000, to 23,063,288 contracts (13,677,532 calls and 9,385,756 puts) in June 2001. In June, CBOE exchange-wide average daily volume for the month was 1,098,252 contracts, a decrease of 1% from June 2000. Open interest in all CBOE listed options stood at 79,769,523 contracts at month's end, an increase of 95% over the end of June last year, when open interest stood at 40,963,355 contracts.

Trading in S&P 500® Index options (SPXTM) totaled 1,462,922 contracts (598,844 calls and 864,078 puts), a decrease of 2% from June 2000 volume of 1,492,008 contracts. Trading in SPX LEAPS totaled 109,654 contracts in June, an increase of 122% over June 2000 volume of 49,353 contracts. Trading volume for the month of June in S&P 100® Index options (OEX®) was 749,440 contracts (366,640 calls and 382,800 puts).

Trading volume in CBOE's popular index product, the MNXSM, based on one-tenth of the Nasdaq-100 Index®, continued to post impressive figures with 639,202 contracts (275,635 calls and 363,567 puts) traded in June. MNX options had an average daily volume of 30,438 contracts in June. Open interest in MNX stood at 643,933 contracts at the end of June.

Volume in Nasdaq-100 Index® (NDXSM) options totaled 133,101 contracts for the month, a 4% decrease from the June 2000 volume of 139,201 contracts. Open interest in NDX stood at 67,709 contracts.

Stock option volume for the month of June totaled 17,231,811 contracts (10,904,981 calls and 6,326,830 puts), a decrease of 19% from June 2000's stock option volume of 21,279,259 contracts. Open interest in stock options stood at 72,033,245 contracts (46,299,189 calls and 25,734,056 puts) at the end of June, an increase of 92% over the close of June 2000 when open interest stood at 37,563,721 contracts.

Volume in equity LEAPSTM (Long-Term Equity AnticiPation Securities®) continued to increase in June, as investors employed longer-term options in response to market uncertainty. Total volume in equity LEAPS totaled 1,400,242 contracts, an 11% increase over June 2000 volume of 1,257,527 contracts.
