CBOE Futures Exchange, LLC Year-Over-Year Volume Increases For Tenth Consecutive Month During July - Trading Volume Up 3% Versus Previous Month

The CBOE Futures Exchange, LLC (CFE) today announced that July 2010 trading volume totaled 270,014 contracts, compared to 89,851 contracts during July 2009.  July marked the tenth consecutive month in which total volume registered an increase when comparing year-over-year trading activity.  July's volume rose three percent from the 261,451 contracts that traded during June 2010. 

July's average daily volume (ADV) of 12,857 contracts exceeded the year-ago ADV of 4,084 contracts.  When compared to 11,884 contracts per day during June, July's ADV was up eight percent.

CFE's year-to-date trading volume of 1,936,346 contracts is ahead of the 392,352 contracts for the same period in 2009.  Year-to-date ADV is 13,354 contracts, versus the 2,687 contracts per day in 2009.   

July volume in VIX futures, based on the CBOE Volatility Index (ticker VX), totaled 269,372 contracts traded, exceeding the 88,941 contracts in July 2009, and was up three percent from the 260,665 contracts in June.  ADV in VIX futures during July was 12,827 contracts, compared to the 4,043 contracts per day a year ago and the 11,848 contracts per day from the previous month.    

Volume in CBOE mini-VIX futures (ticker VM) totaled 634 contracts for the month, a decline of 25 percent from the 845 contracts traded in July 2009 and down 17 percent from the 760 contracts traded the previous month.  CBOE mini-VIX futures contracts are one-tenth the size of CFE's standard CBOE VIX futures contract.  Additional information on mini-VIX futures can be found at:http://cfe.cboe.com/Products/Products_VM.aspx.
