Bursa Malaysia Berhad (“Bursa Malaysia” or “the Exchange) is launching a public education campaign today called “What’s Your Goal”, aimed at increasing the awareness and consideration of share investment. Bursa Malaysia will be collaborating with Participating Organisations (POs) to empower Malaysians to meet their financial aspirations and goals through share investment. The campaign will run for three months, from 21 November 2017 until February 2018.
Chief Executive Officer of Bursa Malaysia, Datuk Seri Tajuddin Atan said, “Education begins with awareness and we want the public to consider share investment as part of their investment portfolio, and change the perception that share investments are too risky. Investing in shares will help diversify portfolio, with the opportunity to get higher returns when compared to fixed deposit, current and savings account.”
“Based on a survey conducted by Bursa Malaysia on 853 respondents, only 4% invest in shares with the rest preferring less risky traditional investment tools. We hope to increase the visibility and accessibility of share investments as an alternative investment tool that Malaysians can seriously consider to achieve their financial goals. It all begins with awareness and education. As such, this campaign places emphasis on educating the public on investing as an informed investor,” Datuk Seri Tajuddin added.
As part of the campaign, over 80 investor seminars and workshops will be held, beginning November in Kuala Lumpur before moving across the country. A three-month nationwide roadshow will also be carried out to encourage and facilitate the public to open a Central Depository System (CDS) account as a start to their share investment journey.
The campaign will also be enhanced and supported by Bursa Marketplace at www.bursamarketplace.com, for the public to use and learn the “trip-to-trade” at their own pace. Investors will have access to various information including performance of public listed companies. As such, “What’s Your Goal” campaign encompasses a holistic approach to educate and assist the public in making wise and informed share investment decisions.
Besides shares, there are also other investment products on Bursa Malaysia like Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs), Structured Warrants and Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs), which are attractive and can meet the different risk appetite of investors. For example, ETFs do not impose a sales charge and have significantly lower management fee compared to other managed unit trust funds. Stamp duty exemptions announced in Budget 2018, will further enhance the attractiveness of ETFs as a low cost investment product.
In addition, Bursa Malaysia also offers shariah-compliant products such as i-ETFs and i-REITs, and as at end of October 2017, there are 677 shariah-compliant stocks for investors to invest in.
Seize this opportunity and be part of Malaysia’s vibrant capital market to achieve your financial goal and aspirations.
