Brazilian Mercantile & Futures Exchange (BM&F): 44.9 Million Contracts In August

The Brazilian Mercantile & Futures Exchange ended the month of August with 44.94 million contracts traded. During the same period last year, the traded volume was 26.02 million contracts. The markets with the best performance in August were Bovespa Index, Dollar, and Interest Rate futures. Bovespa Index traded 3.48 million contracts, in comparison to 1.63 million contracts traded in August 2006. Dollar futures, which last August traded 4.65 million contracts, this August, registered 9.04 million contracts. The Interest Rate market traded 22.93 million contracts in August/2007 against 14.84 million contracts in August/2006. In relation to mini futures contracts, BM&F also topped the registered volume of August 2006: 1.20 million contracts were traded in August 2007 against 720.64 thousand.

BM&F’s agricultural markets (futures, options, and ex-pit) traded during August/2007 291.85 thousand contracts. It’s the first time the agricultural markets trade more than 200 thousand contracts in a single month.
