BOVESPA Monthly Performance - May: Brazil Received The Investment Grade Rating By Fitch And IBOVESPA Marked Its Historical High At 73,516 Points On May 20

International Investors

The net inflow of foreign investments in the Brazilian Stock Market accounted to USD 5,053,668,927.90 in 2008. This figure sums up the purchases of international investors in public offerings - which amounted to USD 4,469,405,724.90, as well as the net trading value at BOVESPA - which registered an inflow of USD 584,263,203.00, as of May 30, 2008.

In May, international investors’ total purchase at BOVESPA was USD 29,960,557,768.00 and total sales of USD 29,633,648,036.00. This balance totals a net inflow of USD 326,909,722.00.

The International Investor’s participation in public offerings represented 52.3% of the total value of offerings in 2008, which accounted to USD 8,488,946,932.80 -considering only the IPOs whose closure notices were published up to June 3rd 2008.

Trading Value and Number of Trades

In May, the total trading value of BOVESPA was BRL 140.7 billion (or USD 84.9 billion). The daily average was BRL 7.0 billion (or USD 4.2 billion) and the number of trades was 260,256. For comparison purposes, April registered BRL 6.2 billion (or USD 3.7 billion) as financial value daily traded with 206,130 trades.

The most active stocks in terms of trading value were:

  • Petrobras PN (BRL 23.3 billion or USD 14.0 billion);
  • Vale R Doce PNA (BRL 12.8 billion or USD 7.7 billion);
  • Petrobras ON (BRL 4.8 billion or USD 2.9 billion);
  • Bradesco PN (BRL 4.4 billion or USD 2.63 billion) and
  • Usiminas PNA (BRL 4.3 billion or USD 2.61 billion).
Investors Groups

In May, the International Investors’ stake reached 35% of the total trading value, compared to 33% registered in April. Individuals registered 28% (against 26%), followed by Institutional Investors with 26% (against 29%); Financial Institutions, 7% (against 8%); Companies, 4%, (against 4%).

Home Broker

The Home Broker system reached the following performance in May:

  • The daily average trading value registered BRL 1.8 billion
  • The daily number of trades reached 167,230 (this figures consider all trades with one side, at least, executed via home broker).
  • Total traded value amounted to BRL 36.8 billion
  • 3.3 million total number of trades
  • The average value per trade registered BRL 11.0 thousand

The After Market totalled 92,141 trades and BRL 969,796,106.20 as financial value this month.

Market Capitalization

In May, BOVESPA’s market capitalization amounted to BRL 2.6 trillion (or USD 1.6 trillion) against BRL 2.5 trillion (or USD 1.5 trillion) in April.

Novo Mercado and Levels of Corporate Governance

The 162 companies listed at Level 1, Level 2 and Novo Mercado by the end of May represented 59% of BOVESPA’s total market capitalization, 67% of the trading value and 72% of the number of trades in the cash market.

Copel joined Level 1 in May.

Markets

The Cash Market was responsible for 93% of the total traded value in May, followed by the Options (4%) and Forward (3%) markets.

Ibovespa

The Ibovespa benchmark closed May up 6.9% at 72,592 points.

In May, ITEL closed the month down (0.3% at 1,345 points). The other indices closed the month up: ISE (10.0% at 2,258 points); INDX (8.3% at 12,008 points); ITAG (7.8% at 9,117 points); IBrX-50 (7.4% at 10,914 points); IBrX-100 (7.2% at 24,080 points); IEE (6.3% at 19,174 points); IGC (5.8% at 7,223 points) and IVBX-2 (5.3% at 5,937 points).

Fixed Income

In May, 2 FDIC (Receivable Investment Fund) started to trade at BOVESPA Fix and SOMA Fix Markets. The trading value of BOVESPA’s fixed income markets turned over BRL 33,094,293.69 (or USD 19,942,367.06).

Out of this total, BRL 27,307,126.92 (or USD 16,459,734.20) referred to FIDCs, BRL 674,180.56 (or USD 406,549.21) to CRIs, and BRL 5,112,986.21 (or USD 3,076,083.65) to Corporate Bonds.

Securities Lending Program

The Securities Lending Program of CBLC (BTC) registered a turnover of BRL 31.7 billion in May, against BRL 28.3 billion registered in April. May registered 49,687 trades (against 49,742 in the previous month). These transactions represented 245 underlying securities (against 253 in April).

Individual Investors

By the end of May, the Brazilian Clearing and Depository Corporation (CBLC) registered 486,706 active individual investor custody accounts; by the end of April, this number was 479,724.

BOVESPA Popularization Campaign

In May, 78 new investment clubs have registered with BOVESPA. The year 2008 already counts on 448 new investment clubs registered. This is part of the results of the popularization campaign “BOVESPA Where You Are”. Since its creation, in 2002, it has stimulated the creation of 2,495 investment clubs.

BOVESPA had 2,525 clubs registered as of May 2008. According to the last available data (April/08), the investment clubs’ total assets amounted to BRL 16.2 billion, with 153,798 investors.
