BOVESPA And The Brazilian Capital Market On The Spot - Eleven New Corporate Fixed Income Instruments Started Trading At BOVESPA FIX

International Investors

The net outflow of foreign investments in the Brazilian Stock Market accounted to BRL 1,004,323,500.70 (or USD 561,093,371.80) in 2008. This figure includes purchases of international investors in the public offerings, which amounted to BRL 3,726,827,622.30 (or USD 2,102,859,683.20), and the net trading value at BOVESPA, which registered an outflow of BRL 4,731,151,123.00 (or USD 2,663,953,056.00), as of January 31, 2008.

In January, international investors’ total purchase at BOVESPA was BRL 41,932,931,354.00 (or USD 23,650,055,213.00) and total sales of BRL 46,664,082,477.00 (or USD 26,314,008,268.00), totalling a net outflow of BRL 4,731,151,123.00 (or USD 2,663,953,056.00).

Trading Value

In January, the total trading value was BRL 126.5 billion (or USD 71.3 billion), against BRL 113.4 billion (or USD 63.5 billion) in the previous month. The daily average was BRL 5.6 billion (or USD 3.4 billion) and the number of trades was 208,469. For comparison purposes, December registered 198,939 trades and BRL 6.3 billion (or USD 3.5 billion) as financial value daily traded.

The most active stocks in terms of trading value were:

  • Petrobras PN (BRL 20.2 billion or USD 11.4 billion);
  • Vale R Doce PNA (BRL 13.2 billion or USD 7.5 billion);
  • Vale R Doce ON (BRL 4.3 billion or USD 2.4 billion);
  • Petrobras ON (BRL 3.9 billion or USD 2.2 billion); and
  • Bradesco PN (BRL 3.4 billion or USD 1.9 billion).

Investors Groups

In January, the International Investors’ stake reached 35.20% of the total trading value, compared to 35.16% registered in December. Institutional Investors registered 30% (against 31%), followed by Individuals with 24% (against 22%); Financial Institutions, 9% (against 10%); Companies, 1.8%, (against 2.0%).

Home Broker

The Home Broker system reached the following performance in January:The Home Broker system reached the following performance in January:

  • Overall record of daily average trading value, which registered BRL 1 billion
  • Overall record of daily number of trades, that reached 120,278 (this figures considers all trades in which at least one side was done via home broker).
  • Total traded value amounted to BRL 24.7 billion
  • Over 3 million trades
  • The average value per trade registered BRL 9.8 thousand

The After Market totalled 68,247 trades and BRL 913,151,436.28 as financial value this month.

Market Capitalization

In January, BOVESPA’s market capitalization amounted to BRL 2.3 trillion (or USD 1.3 trillion) against BRL 2.5 trillion (or USD 1.4 trillion) in December.

Novo Mercado and Levels of Corporate Governance

The 157 companies which by the end of January were listed at BOVESPA’s Special Levels of Corporate Governance represented 55% of BOVESPA’s total market capitalization, 68% of the trading value and 72% of the number of trades in the cash market.

In January, Ideiasnet S.A. joined Novo Mercado.

Ibovespa

The Ibovespa benchmark closed January down 6.8% at 59,490 points.

Other Indices

In January, ITEL closed the month up (+8.8% at 1,331 points). The other indices closed the month down and performed as following: IEE (-7.0% at 16,089 points); IGC (-12.8% at 5,926 points); ITAG (-14.1% at 7,431 points); ISE (-10.3% at 1,804 points); INDX (-7.1% at 9,250 points); IBrX-50 (-8.8% at 8,892 points); IBrX-100 (-8.6% at 19,670 points); and IVBX-2 (-6.0% at 5,135 points).

Fixed Income

In January, 6 FDICs (Receivable Investment Funds) and 5 Corporate Bonds started to trade at BOVESPA Fix and SOMA Fix Markets. The trading value of BOVESPA’s fixed income markets turned over BRL 494,454,171.48 (against BRL 162,764,276.51 totalled in previous month). Out of this total, BRL 456,306,509.40 referred to FIDCs, BRL 28,331,996.30 to CRIs and BRL 9,815,665.78 to Corporate Bonds.

Securities Lending Program

The Securities Lending Program of CBLC (BTC) registered a trading value of BRL 32.8 billion in January, against BRL 25.8 billion registered in December. In January, 63,394 trades were executed (against 47,809 in the previous month). These transactions had a total of 261 underlying securities (against 248 in December).

Individual Investors

By the end of January Brazilian Clearing and Depository Corporation (CBLC) registered 466,830 active individual investor custody accounts, against 456,557 in December.

BOVESPA Popularization Campaign

In January, 85 new investment clubs have registered with BOVESPA, the highest number registered in a single month.

Since September 2002, the popularization campaign “BOVESPA Where You Are” has stimulated the creation of 2,132 investment clubs.

BOVESPA had a total of 2,236 clubs registered as of January 2008. According to the last available data (December/07), the investment clubs’ total assets amounted to BRL 14.8 billion, with 154,102 investors.
