BME Markets Monthly Report - The Trading Volume On The Spanish Exchange Reaches €702.07bn To June - The Number Of Trades On The Spanish Exchange Increases By 8.20% In The First Six Months Of The Year

Equities

The number of trades in equities on the Spanish exchange to June totalled 18 million, up 8.20% from the 17 million trades reported during the same period a year earlier. This reflects the robustness of BME’s activity. The number of trades in June was 2.96 million, up 20.60% from May.

The trading volume in the first six months of the year came in at €702.07bn, up 32% from that posted in the same period in 2006 and down 18% from the exceptional corresponding period in 2007. In June 2008 equities trading volume on the Spanish exchange reached €105.34bn, up 8% from the previous month.

Between January and June trading on the ETF market came in at €4.39bn, up 150% from the same period in 2007. In June trading volume came in at €835 million, up 176% from the same month in 2007.

Futures and Options

In June trading in Futures and Options reached a monthly all times record at 11.1 million contracts, up 83% from the same period in 2007; highlights include Futures on Stocks, with 7.4 million contracts, up 142%, and Options on Stocks, with 2.1 million contracts, up 53% from the same period in 2007.

Trading in BME’s Derivatives business area to June grew by 85% from the same period last year to 40 million contracts. It is worth noting the heavy trading activity posted by Futures on Stocks, with 23 million contracts, up 209% from a year earlier.

On June 20th, the market reached an all times record on a single day of trading of Futures on Socks, with 2.4 million contracts. This trading made the whole Spanish derivatives market to reach an all times record of contracts traded at 3.6 million contracts.

Warrants and Certificates

The number of warrants admitted to trading between January and June 2008 exceeded 4,295, up 40% from the same period in 2007. In June the trading volume on the warrants and certificates market reached €226 million, up 11.20% from the previous month, and the number of trades came in at 39,319. Activity on this segment to June reached €1.58bn, down 37.08% from the same period a year earlier while the number of trades was 302,169, down 25.76% from the same period in 2007.

Corporate Debt

Corporate Debt trading in June reached €204.53bn, up 130.2% from the same month a year ago. The trading volume to June was €908.23bn, up 67.9% from the previous year. New issues in June came in at €43.74bn, down 0.3% from the same month a year earlier. New issues from January to June totalled €253.25bn, down 21.5% from a year earlier. The outstanding balance on the private fixed income market at the end of June was €809.42bn, up 19.7% from a year earlier.

Public Debt

Trading volume on BME’s Public Debt electronic trading platform stands at €7.07bn, exceeding the share represented by other trading platforms, at 70.30%.
