Battle For Marketshare Heats Up As Valuations Continue To Decline - FTSE Mondo Visione Exchanges Index drops 14.8 per cent

The value of the world’s listed exchanges began 2009 in decline amid continued international market turbulence, and increasing pressure to hold revenues as trading volumes decreased.

The FTSE Mondo Visione Exchanges Index, which aims to reflect market sentiment and is the key indicator of exchanges performance, was down 14.8 per cent in January.

Herbie Skeete, Managing Director, Mondo Visione and also Co-founder of the Index said:

“January was another tough month for exchanges but there are signs that those exchanges with a more diversified business model will be better insulated against the current turbulent market conditions.”

The Index closed at 13452.77 on 30 January 2009, down from 15782.62 on 31 December 2008. Year to date, the Index has decreased by 14.8 per cent.

The FTSE/Mondo Visione Exchanges Index best performer by capital returns in US dollars was TMX Group Inc. with a 26.8 per cent increase in the share price from December 31 to January 30 2009.

The FTSE/Mondo Visione Exchanges Index worst performer by capital returns in US dollars was the Intercontinental Exchange Inc. (ICE) with a 30.9 per cent decrease in the share price from December 31 to January 30 2009.
