Barclays Global Investors ETF Landscape: Industry Review, February 2009

Date 20/03/2009

Barclays Global Investors has just published the February issue of its monthly ETF Industry Review, part of BGI's ETF Landscape series: please click here for a downloadable copy. This document is a review of the Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) and Exchange Traded Products (ETPs) industry year to date. Since the launch of the first ETF in the US in 1993, the ETF industry has experienced phenomenal growth. In recent years, the rapid growth in new ETF offerings has been one of the most striking elements of this remarkable story. At the end of January 2009, there were 1,602 ETFs, with 2,683 listings and assets of US$658.8 Bn from 85 providers on 42 exchanges around the world.

The remarkable growth of the ETF industry has had many positive consequences for investors. The entrance of more asset managers has boosted competition and supported innovation while the availability of more ETF products has increased choice. However, a less positive aspect of this growth has been an increasingly complex and challenging landscape for investors.

BGI's ETF Landscape Industry Review is aimed at providing professional investors with an up-to-date snapshot of latest key industry trends with a view to helping them make more informed decisions. The publication contains key data relating to five broad areas: ETF and products, ETF and ETP providers, exchanges, index providers and planned product launches.
