Barclays Global Investors ETF And ETP Industry Review - End Of February 2009

Global ETF and ETP Industry 2009:
  • At the end of February 2009 the Global ETF industry had 1,603 ETFs with 2,720 listings, assets of $593.49 billion, from 85 providers on 42 exchanges around the world.
  • YTD assets have fallen by 26.9% which is greater than the 18.4% fall in the MSCI World index in USD terms.
  • YTD the number of ETFs increased by 0.8% with 25 new ETFs launched.
  • YTD the average daily trading volume in USD increased by 11.7% to US$89.8 Billion.
  • Standard & Poors (S&P) ranks 1st with US$153.7 Bn in ETF AUM tied to their benchmarks, while MSCI ranks 2nd with US$111.3 Bn, followed by BarCap in 3rd with US$54.1 Bn.
  • There are currently plans to launch 679 new ETFs.
  • Globally, net sales of mutual funds (excluding ETFs) were minus US$111.9 Bn, while net sales of ETFs were US$268.0 Bn during 2008 according to Strategic Insight.
  • Additionally, there were 274 other ETPs (Exchange Traded Products) with assets of US$68.46 Bn from 29 providers on 15 exchanges.
European ETF and ETP Industry 2009:
  • At the end of February 2009 the European ETF industry had 643 ETFs with 1,597 listings, assets of $129.17 billion, from 29 providers on 20 exchanges.
  • YTD assets have fallen by 9.6%, which is less than the 20.7% fall in the MSCI Europe index in USD terms.
  • YTD the number of ETFs increased by 1.7% with 7 new ETFs launched.
  • YTD the average daily trading volume in US dollar has increased by 0.5% to US$2.03 billion.
  • LIn Europe net sales of mutual funds (excluding ETFs) were minus US$495.1 Bn while net sales of ETFs domiciled in Europe were US$76.5 Bn during 2008 according to Lipper FMI.
  • Additionally, there were 124 other ETPs (Exchange Traded Products) with assets of US$9.54 Bn from 2 providers on 6 exchanges.
U.S. ETF and ETP Industry 2009:
  • At the end of February 2009 the US ETF industry had 694 ETFs, assets of $402.16 billion, from 18 providers on 3 exchanges.
  • YTD assets have fallen by 30.7%, which is more than the 18.0% fall in the MSCI US index in USD terms.
  • YTD the number of ETFs decreased by 0.6% with 13 new ETFs launched, while 17 ETFs were delisted.
  • YTD the average daily trading volume in US dollar has increased by 12% to US$86.2 billion.
  • In the US net sales of mutual funds (excluding ETFs) were US$424.0 Bn, while net sales of ETFs domiciled in the US were US$176.0 Bn during 2008 according to Strategic Insight.
  • Additionally, there were 139 other ETPs (Exchange Traded Products) with assets of US$49.95 Bn from 18 providers on 2 exchanges.
