Average Daily Volume at CBOE Tops One Million Contracts For Twelfth Consecutive Month

Trading volume at the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE), the world's largest options exchange, continued to surpass record levels as 23,885,331 options contracts (15,646,712 calls and 8,238,619 puts) traded in August, a 22% increase over the year ago record August volume of 19,536,851 contracts. Open interest in all CBOE listed options stood at 47,291,931 contracts at month's end, an incredible 81% higher than the close of August last year when open interest stood at 26,099,064 contracts.

In August, average daily volume was 1,038,493 contracts per day, making it one consecutive year that average daily volume has exceeded a million contracts per day at CBOE, and surpassing August '99's average daily volume of 888,039 contracts by 17%. Year-to-date average daily volume now stands at a record 1,287,892 contracts, 42% ahead of the year-ago level of 907,064 contracts per day.

Total option volume at CBOE hit a new year-to-date record for the end of August with 217,653,806 contracts (143,996,348 calls and 73,657,458 puts) which is 44% ahead of the previous August year-to-date record of 151,479,686 contracts, set last August.

Year-to-date volume in stock options reached a record 187,264,686 contracts (130,816,373 calls and 56,448,313 puts), an increase of 64% over the year-to-date total of 114,494,452 contracts traded at the end of August 1999. During the month of August a total of 20,902,018 stock option contracts (14,335,234 calls and 6,566,784 puts) traded, an increase of 41% over August 1999's stock option volume of 14,785,707 contracts. Open interest in stock options trading stood at 43,368,896 contracts (27,703,213 calls and 15,665,683 puts) at the end of August, a phenomenal increase of 99% over the close of August '99 when open interest stood at 21,777,580 contracts. Total index option volume for August at CBOE was 2,981,810 contracts (1,311,263 calls and 1,670,547 puts) compared to 4,748,076 contracts in August 1999, a decline of 37%. Trading in S&P 500® Index options (SPX) reached 1,509,913 contracts (684,747 calls and 825,166 puts) and open interest stood at 1,884,723 contracts versus 2,255,163 contracts at the close of August 1999, a decrease of 16%. Trading volume for the month of August in the S&P 100® Index options (OEX) was 876,796 contracts (363,684 calls and 513,112 puts). Open interest in OEX options stood at 202,045 contracts at the end of August.

CBOE launched its newest index product, the MNXsm, on Monday, August 14th. The MNX is a 1/10th size version of the Nasdaq-100® index (NDX), which is a modified capitalization-weighted index composed of 100 of the largest non-financial securities listed on the Nasdaq stock market. From its inception, the MNX encountered brisk trading, with 160,497 contracts (93,696 calls and 66,801 puts) traded. Average daily volume stood at 11,464 contracts, while open interest in MNX reached 116,724 at the end of August. For the month, MNX was the third most-actively traded index option at CBOE.
