As of August 25 the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.07% in August, closing at 11386.25. Stock market indexes in Europe, Asia and globally were down in August, according to preliminary monthly figures from global index providers, Dow Jones Indexes and STOXX Ltd.

  • The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.07% in August, closing at 11386.25. Year-to-date, the index is down 14.16%.
  • Measuring Europe, the Dow Jones STOXX 50 Index is down 0.98% for August, closing at 2853.18. Year-to-date, the index is down 22.54%.
  • Measuring Eastern Europe, the Dow Jones STOXX EU Enlarged Total Market Index is down 6.39% for August, closing at 282.65. Year-to-date, the index is down 22.67%.
  • The performance of the Dow Jones STOXX EU Enlarged 15 blue-chip index is down 6.79% for August, closing at 3094.24. The index is down 16.46% so far this year.
  • The Dow Jones Asian Titans 50 Index fell 6.13% in August to 144.94. So far this year, the index is down 17.06%.
  • The Dow Jones Global Titans 50 Index fell 2.51% in August, closing at 195.82. Year-to-date, the index is down 18.44%.

AUGUST 2008 Sector Winners and Losers

  • In the U.S., the Dow Jones U.S. Consumer Services Index was the biggest winner in August, posting a 3.73% gain. The Dow Jones U.S. Basic Materials Index posted the biggest loss, dropping 6.09%.
  • In Europe, the Dow Jones STOXX 600 Food & Beverage Index posted the biggest gain, climbing 6.63%. The Dow Jones STOXX 600 Basic Resources Index had the sharpest decline, falling 5.08%.
  • In Asia, the Dow Jones Asia/Pacific Health Care Index posted the narrowest loss, down 0.27%. The Dow Jones Asia/Pacific Basic Materials Index posted the biggest loss, dropping 11.16%.
  • Globally, the Dow Jones World Retail Titans Index had the best performance, climbing 3.01%. The Dow Jones World Basic Resources Titans Index posted the biggest loss, dropping 11.68%.
