Angela Merkel, Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, will be this year's recipient of the Edmond Israel Foundation Vision for Europe Award in recognition of her "outstanding contribution to the development of the European Future".
Angela Merkel will receive the award in Luxembourg, on 14 November 2006. The laudatio will be given by H.E. Jean-Claude Juncker, Prime Minister of Luxembourg.
Mrs Merkel is the ninth recipient of the award, the second German Chancellor to receive it after Helmut Kohl in 1997 and the first woman to receive it.
The first recipient of the award was Jacques Santer, then President of the European Commission. Other recipients have been Javier Solana, Guy Verhofstadt, Jean-Luc Dehaene, Jean-Claude Juncker, Árpád Göncz and Wim Duisenberg.
The event is organised by Clearstream International and co-sponsored by Dexia/BIL.
