ACER: Stakeholders Believe That REMIT Benefits The Integrity And Transparency Of Energy Markets

Date 07/09/2018

In the 2nd Energy Market Integrity and Transparency Forum – organised by ACER in Ljubljana on 6 and 7 September – stakeholders highlighted the benefits of REMIT for the integrity and transparency of wholesale energy markets in the European Union and welcomed the fact that REMIT data collection and data sharing with national authorities are fully operational.

Participants also called upon the Agency to dedicate more resources for further ACER guidance, improving data quality and for enhancing market transparency. In his concluding remarks, agreeing with these stakeholders’ requests, Alberto Pototschnig, Director of ACER, highlighted that “for REMIT to continue being a success story, the Agency needs adequate funding." He called for stakeholders to support ACER in its budgetary requests.

The Forum included several presentations by ACER experts and stakeholders on REMIT operations, transaction reporting and data quality; REMIT policy; market surveillance activities; and market surveillance by organised market places. Participants were presented with statistics regarding the triggered alerts on suspicious events in energy markets, demonstrating the EU wide market surveillance currently in place.

The Forum also included four thematic sessions. The first session discussed potential lessons learnt from REMIT reporting from a stakeholder’s point of view and the potential use of REMIT data for transparency purposes. The second one focused on transparency on the disclosure of inside information. The third session considered monitoring, coordination of surveillances across Europe and the role of organised market places. In the final session - “REMIT Beyond” - participants highlighted upcoming challenges due to market design developments and they called for a REMIT II legislative package to face them.

The conclusions and other related documents will soon be available here.
