414 Billion Euros In Turnover On The German Stock Exchanges In August - Equities Turnover For First Eight Months At Record Level - New Xetra Record In Growth And Small Stocks

A total of 413.9 billion euros in equities, warrants and fixed-income securities was traded on the German stock exchanges in August. This is an increase of about 9 Percent compared to last years figures (August 99: 379 billion euros). The turnover statistics show that the total comprises 296.6 billion euros in equities, warrants and exchange-traded funds and 117 billion euros in fixed-income securities. The volume traded in equities in Frankfurt during the first eight months nearly doubled over the same period of 1999: Whereas some 1,5 trillion euros in volume had been traded during the first eight months of 1999, the eight-month total is already up to 2,9 trillion euros this year. Trading at FWB, the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, accounts for about 88 percent of the total equities turnover nationwide.

The order-book statistics of Deutsche Börse, which are based on single counting of all transactions in the order book of Xetra® and on the trading floor, shows a total volume of 90 billion euros traded in equities on the German stock exchanges in August. Of this total, 78 billion euros were traded in German equities, 63 billion euros (about 81 percent) through Xetra, and some 11.2 billion euros (or 14.4 percent) in trading on the floor of FWB. Another new record was set in Xetra trading of growth stocks in August. Xetra set a new record in the Nemax 50 with more than 63 percent, in the MDAX with 59 percent and in the SDAX with 29 percent of the total volume traded in these stocks.

Deutsche Telekom AG was the most active DAX blue chip in August with volume of about 8.7 billion euros traded in its shares. MLP was the leading MDAX stock, with 379.5 million euros in shares traded, and Intershop was the top Neuer Markt stock with share turnover of 1.2 million euros. In the SMAX (small-cap quality) segment, IFCO Systems AG ranked first with a volume of 38.3 million euros traded in its shares.
