    The U.S. blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 7.19% in 2007, closing at 13359.61. Stock market indexes in Europe, Asia, and globally were up for the year, according to preliminary figures from global index providers, Dow Jones Indexes and STOXX Ltd.

    • The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.09% in December, closing the year up 7.19% at 13359.61. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed in positive territory 143 days in 2007. (Index calculated in US dollars)

    • In the U.S., the Dow Jones Oil & Gas sector index was the biggest winner in December, posting a 7.58% gain. The Dow Jones Financials sector index posted the biggest loss, dropping 5.40%.
    • In Europe, the Dow Jones STOXX 600 Chemicals sector index posted the biggest gain, climbing 5.34%. The Dow Jones STOXX 600 Basic Resources sector index posted the biggest loss, falling 4.27 %.
    • In Asia, the Dow Jones Telecommunications sector index posted the biggest gain, climbing 0.02%. The Dow Jones Technology sector index posted the biggest loss, dropping 4.82%.
    • Globally, the Dow Jones Oil & Gas sector index lead, rising 5.63% in the Dow Jones Sector Titans indexes. The Dow Jones Banks sector index posted the biggest loss, down 5.74%.
    2007 Sector Winners and Losers
    • In the U.S., the Dow Jones Oil & Gas sector index was the biggest winner in 2007 with a gain of 33.39%. The Dow Jones Financials sector index posted the biggest loss, off 20.15% for the year.
    • In Europe, the Dow Jones STOXX 600 Basic Resources sector index posted the biggest gain, climbing 28.80%. The Dow Jones STOXX 600 Travel & Leisure sector index posted the biggest loss, falling 17.05%
    • In Asia, the Dow Jones Oil & Gas sector index posted the biggest gain, climbing 48.91%. The Dow Jones Technology sector index posted the biggest loss, dropping 6.47%.
    • Globally, the Dow Jones Basic Resources sector index lead, rising 46.54% in the Dow Jones Sector Titans Indexes. The Dow Jones Banks sector index posted the biggest loss, down 16.11%.
