Global Markets Rebound Amidst Volatility: FTSE Mondo Visione Exchange Index Achieves Record High

Date 11/09/2024

Global equity markets have shown remarkable resilience in a dramatic turnaround from early August's market turmoil. Initially shaken by U.S. recession fears and the unwinding of significant Japanese yen carry trades, investors worldwide quickly adopted a risk-off stance. However, by the end of the month, most market losses were recouped, demonstrating the inherent robustness of global exchanges.

The FTSE Mondo Visione Exchange Index closed at an unprecedented 79,764.95 points, marking a robust 8.2% increase from July's 73,726.02 points and setting a new all-time high for the index. This rally underscores renewed investor confidence and market adaptability in a fluctuating economic environment.

Leading the charge, the top five exchanges by market capitalisation at August's close include:

  • Intercontinental Exchange: USD92.64 billion
  • CME Group: USD77.67 billion
  • London Stock Exchange Group: USD72.15 billion
  • Deutsche Boerse: USD41.57 billion
  • Nasdaq: USD41.47 billion

Highlighting the month's standout performers, the Multi Commodity Exchange of India recorded a stunning 20.6% increase in share price, with NZX and Brazil's B3 following closely at 17.9% and 16.6%, respectively. Conversely, Croatia's Zagrebacka Burza dd faced a 21.1% decline, alongside significant decreases in the U.K.'s Aquis Exchange (19.2%) and Kenya's Nairobi Securities Exchange (5.8%).

Herbie Skeete, Managing Director of Mondo Visione and Co-founder of the Index commented: "The Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) is solidifying its lead over the CME Group in our global exchange rankings, consistently capturing market share from CME's energy futures platform. Despite CME's strong annual profit growth in recent years, projected earnings suggest a slowdown, with anticipated interest rate cuts posing further challenges."

"In this competitive landscape, the London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG) remains a formidable presence, just behind CME Group in our ranking, prompting speculation about whether a merger of equals is on the cards".
